Building Better Student-Recruiter Relationships: A Q&A with BDO’s Campus Recruiting Team

STRIVE may have been cancelled this year, but that’s not stopping us from learning a thing or two from the recruiting leaders who were set to speak! We caught up with BDO’s Stephanie Tyler and Sarah Turcotte to learn more about their early talent recruiting strategy, learn how their team is building more meaningful relationships with students, and more.

Tell us a bit about BDO.

BDO delivers assurance, tax, and advisory services to clients throughout the country and around the globe. To learn more, visit https://www.bdo.com/careers.

How did you get started in early talent recruitment? What interests you most about it?

We love working with students. Early talent recruiters are connecting with students earlier and earlier in their collegiate careers. The traditional campus recruiter role has evolved to be even more of a career advisor to students — which we love! Nothing is better than to see a student you’ve counseled land the internship they’ve been wanting.

In the past year, what professional accomplishment are you most proud of?

We launched pre-recorded video interviews this past year. This, in tandem with traditional on-campus recruitment, has allowed us to reach a larger pool of candidates and move them through the process faster than ever before, resulting in a diverse and qualified pool of candidates to present to hiring managers.

A big year for BDO

BDO was named one of the 2020 Vault Accounting 50.

What is a professional goal you STRIVE to achieve?

This year we will continue to drive home the value of virtual recruiting at our firm — from continuing momentum from national leaders to execution through our local offices. This is a priority for us as we continue to increase hiring needs, while providing an excellent candidate experience with limited recruiting resources.

What’s the most innovative thing your recruiting team has done this year?

Embracing recruitment technology is not only innovative, but necessary to keep up as early talent recruiting moves faster and earlier. We are proud of the progress we’ve made with live and pre-recorded video interviewing, and will continue to drive innovation through our recruiting processes going forward.

What do you see as the biggest challenge facing early talent recruiting teams?

Currently, students have a lot of options when it comes to careers and companies. How will they choose? This is the biggest challenge facing early talent teams. How do we stay relevant, move fast and early enough, and build an employer brand that attracts top students?

Find out how BDO saved up to $1,000 per recruiting event.

In your opinion, how has early talent recruitment changed over the past 5-10 years?

We used to have structured recruiting seasons that aligned with school semesters, and were driven by school events. Now, with the help of recruitment technology, the norm is to recruit anytime, anywhere.
